Q1. Comment on the influence of English — the language and the way of life — on Indian life as reflected in the story. What is the narrator’s attitude to English?
Answer:The narrator has very poignantly brought out the influence of English language on the way of life in the story. As the title reflects, it is not Vivaha but “marriage” because Ranga, having had the opportunity to go for higher education to Bangalore is to an extent influenced by the West and he could talk in English. Ranga’s homecoming was a great event. People rushed announcing his arrival and went to look at him.
Unlike the people in the village, Ranga said he would not get married immediately but would wait and find the right girl to get married to. He quoted the example of an officer who got married six months back when he was about thirty and his wife, twenty-five. He liked the idea of marrying a mature girl who would understand him, unlike a childish bride. Quoting the classic tale of Shakuntala, he said that Dushyantha would not have fallen in love with Shakuntala if she were young. He said that a man should marry a girl he admires and it would be impossible to admire an immature girl.
Q2. Astrologers’ perceptions are based more on hearsay and conjecture than what they learn from the study of the stars. Comment with reference to the story.
Answer: The character of Shastri in the novel successfully conveys how astrologers’ impressions are founded more on rumour and guesswork than what they learn through the study of the stars. Astrology is claimed to be a science, and all astrological calculations are based on the movement of several celestial bodies in our solar system. However, some argue that what astrologers foretell is based on hearsay and that only a few astrologers are known for their accuracy.
The storyteller, Shyama, went to the astrologer, Shastri, and informed him how he had to make an alliance between Ranga and Ratna feasible. When he returned with Ranga to Shastri and asked him to forecast what the planets said about Ranga, Shastri pretended to do some calculations and said that Ranga was thinking about marrying a girl whose name’s initial is ‘R,’ which was Ratna. He went on to say that the girl’s name was derived from something found in the sea. Then Shyama revealed that the girl in Rama Rao’s residence was Ratna, and Shastri expressed confidence in the proposal’s success. As a result, it’s impossible to tell if astrologers’ forecasts are based on hearsay or on what they learn from star motions.
Q3. Indian society has moved a long way from the way the marriage is arranged in the story. Discuss.
Answer:In the past, marriages in India were usually arranged by parents or relatives. The story ‘Ranga’s Marriage’ shows how the narrator arranged Ranga’s marriage with the help of an astrologer. But now the Indian society has moved a long way from the manner marriage is arranged in the story. After independence, certain changes have come in the Indian society.
Women empowerment and women education have changed the attitude of grooms towards them. Now the consent of the bridegroom as well as bride is seriously considered. Earlier opposition to love marriages has now weakened. Though dowry is a demon, troubling the girl’s party, the girl’s opinion about the boy or his family does carry some weight. Inter-caste marriages which were a strict no-no in the earlier limes, now find some acceptance, especially, among the educated and employed youth.
Q4. What kind of a person do you think the narrator is?
Answer: A narrator is an aged person who has a loving and generous character. Ranga’s decision to remain a bachelor if he does not find a girl he considers suitable for him astounds him. As a result, the narrator decides to find a girl for Ranga, demonstrating his concern for him. He is a good judge of human character and enjoys a good laugh. He is also a gentleman who is always looking out for the best interests of others. The narrator of the story expresses his disapproval of the English custom of love marriage.
