Q1. Why didn’t he pay the school fees on the day he brought money to school?

Answer: The day he brought money to school, the teacher who collected the fee was on leave. Therefore, the child did not pay the school fees on the day he brought the money.

Q2. (i) What were the coins ‘saying’ to him?

Answer: The coins were ‘saying’ to him to spend the fees money and buy jalebis with them.

(ii) Do you think they were misguiding him?

Answer: Yes, the rupee coins were misguiding him. They were asking him to buy Jalebis with the amount meant for school fees.

Q3. Why didn’t he take the coins’ advice? Give two or three reasons.

Answer: He did not take the coins’ advice because he was a good boy. He knew that the coins were misguiding him. He said he got so much at home that he considered even looking at something in the market a sin. Besides, the coins were his fees. If he spent them that day, he would not be able to show his face to Master Ghulam Mohammed the next day at school, and after that to God. He also said that when Master Ghulam Mohammed got angry, he made students stand on the bench till the last bell would ring. Therefore, he decided not to take the coins’ advice.

Answer: The oldest coin said that they were thinking for his own good. According to the oldest coin, he can get the scholarship money the next day also, and that money can be used to pay fees. Hence, he can use the fee money to buy the jalebis very well.

(ii) Did he follow his advice? If not, why not?

Answer: No, the boy did not follow the coins advice initially. He was an honest and promising student and thought he couldn’t defame his reputed family by spending his school fees to buy jalebis. Moreover, he was aware of the harsh punishment that the teacher would inflict upon him if the school fees were not paid on time.

Answer: After reaching home he couldn’t suppress his temptation for fresh Jalabis. He rushed to the shop of halwai. He bought jalebis and enjoyed them.

Answer: He bought a heap of jalebis with one rupee. He ate manyjalebis. His stomach was so
full that he couldn’t eat any more jalebi.

Answer: He distributed the remaining jalebis to the children who had assembled in the gali where he was eating the jalebis.

Answer: When it was time to pay the fees, he tucked his bag under his arm and left the school. He kept walking, praying for some miracle to happen which would save him that one time. He reached the Kambelpur railway station. The elders had warned him to never cross the railway tracks. They had also warned him that one must never eat sweets with one’s fees money. However, he had disobeyed them by doing so.

He disobeyed his parents for the first time and did something that his conscience would not allow.

Answer: He didn’t get four rupees by playing this game. When he lifted the rock, he saw a hairy
worm instead of rupees.

Answer: If God had granted his wish that day, he would never have learnt from his mistake. He would have continued doing such wrong deeds, believing that God would save him after his persuasion.

Besides, he explains his temptation to buy jalebis by making us believe that it was the coins that tempted him, and the mistake wasn’t his at all.
  2. Yes, his outlook on the jalebis episode changes after Class 8. He realizes that if God had given him what he wanted back then, he would never have worked hard to achieve anything in life.
  3. The coins are made to talk to show us how children imagine being tempted. They may not understand that the source of all temptation is their head. So, they put this blame on something outside them.
