(i) What are the three qualities that played a major role in the author’s climb?
Answer: The three qualities that ensured the success of the author were ‘endurance, persistence and will power’.
(ii) Why is adventure, which is risky, also pleasurable?
Answer: Although adventure is risky, it is pleasurable too. This implies that climbing a mountain is a great challenge filled with difficulties, but overcoming those hurdles boosts the confidence, endurance and will power of the climber. The author gives the example of the mighty Mount Everest and reaching its summit is an achievement in itself. There is a great sense of exhilaration, joy and fulfillment to being able to scale such greater heights. There is a feeling of victory and happiness. Hence, the experience is not merely physical. It is indeed both emotional and spiritual.
(iii) What was it about Mount Everest that the author found irresistible?
Answer: Everest, one of the world’s highest and mightiest mountains, lured him in with its beauty, aloofness, harshness, and the hardships encountered along the journey. Climbing it would need every ounce of one’s energy due to the harsh struggle with rock and ice. Even if one’s life is at stake, it cannot be abandoned halfway. The journey back is just as arduous as the journey forward. However, once the summit is reached, there is a sensation of exhilaration, the joy of having accomplished something, the sense of a war fought and won, a sense of victory and happiness. All of these factors contributed to his inability to reject it.
(iv) One does not do it (climb a high peak) for fame alone. What does one do it for, really?
Answer: Climbing a peak means endurance, persistence and will power. The demonstration of these physical qualities is exhilarating for a climber. The experience, apart from being merely physical, is also emotional and spiritual. It surely presents great difficulties. However, man takes delight in overcoming obstacles. Therefore, it is not for fame alone that one climbs a mountain. It is actually for the feelings of exhilaration and satisfaction.
(v) “He becomes conscious in a special manner of his own smallness in this large universe.” This awareness defines an emotion mentioned in the first paragraph. Which is the emotion?
