Comprehension Check
Q1. Why did Bepin Babu worry about what Parimal Ghose had said?
Answer: Bepin Babu was surprised that Parimal Ghose knew a lot of his personal details. He was aware of Bepin’s leg injury, bag of books, his wife’s death and his brother’s insane behaviour. After hearing so many details from that man, Bepin Babu felt with conviction that there was no valid reason for Parimal to lie about his trip to Ranchi. This made him wonder if he really had a temporary memory loss about his visit to Ranchi.
Q2. How did he try to decide who was right – his memory or Parimal Ghose?
Answer: There was a mark of an old injury on his right leg as stated by Parimal but he could not decide if that was from an old childhood injury or due to the reason stated by Parimal. Since he was right about that it caused further confusion in Bepin’s mind and he decided to ask Dinesh Mukerji, who was also with him in Ranchi, as stated by Parimal. This would finally put an end to the confusion that was created.
Q3. Why did Bepin Babu hesitate to visit Mr Mukerji? Why did he finally decide to phone him?
Answer: Bepin Babu hesitated to visit Mr Dinesh Mukerji because he was afraid of the ruthless sarcasm he would have to face. He felt that if the whole story about Ranchi was false, then Mr Mukerji would think that he had gone insane.
Being constantly troubled by the incident at the bookshop and having no other means for verifying the claims of Primal Ghose, Bepin Babu finally decided to ask Mr Mukerji. However, he decided to phone him because that way his embarrassment wouldn’t be visible to the latter.
Q4. What did Mr Mukerji say? Did it comfort Bepin Babu, or add to his worries?
Answer: Dinesh Mukerji confirmed that he was there in Ranchi in ’58 with him. It makes
Bepin Babu more worried as he could not remember that episode.
