Answer: The poet decides not to intrude on him. He does not want to intervene in the natural process of learning. He does not offer him money to buy another ball because he wants the child to learn his lesson of responsibility.
Q2. “… staring down/All his young days into the harbor where/His ball went…”Do you think the boy has had the ball for a long time? Is it linked to the memories of days when he played with it?
Answer: Yes, it seems like the boy has had the ball for a long time. When it bounced into the water, all his memories of the days of childhood flashed in front of him. This led to a realization that those moments would not come back, just like the ball. He can buy new balls and can create new similar moments, but those that are gone, would not ever return.
Q3. What does “in the world of possessions” mean?
Answer: Here, “in the world of possessions” means the world where everything and every action is made to possess something, whether it is the possession of land, property, money, or any other thing. The poet suggests that losing a ball, which is a very small thing, would make the boy understand what it is like to lose something that one possessed. This would make the boy realise that this is a world of possessions and where one can possess more things by buying them, one cannot buy what has been lost.

Answer: No, it seems that the boy did not lose anything earlier. It is evident from the words ‘He senses first responsibility in a world of possessions’. This line suggests that the sense of loss gave him an experience of understanding how several precious moments are lost with the loss of a particular object.
Q5. What does the poet say the boy is learning from the loss of the ball? Try to explain this in your own words.
Answer: The poet says that the boy is learning to cope up with the loss of the ball. He is experiencing grief and learning to grow up in this world of possessions. He learns that there are so many things in life that are lost and cannot be brought back, He is sensing his first responsibility as he has lost the ball. The boy will learn how to stand up and leave the losses behind as he would have understood the true meaning and nature of loss.
Q6. Have you ever lost something you liked very much? Write a paragraph describing how you felt then, and saying whether — and how — you got over your loss.
Answer: Yes, I have lost many things during the past years. I loved my favourite shirt. I loved it very much. It had a very pleasing colour. It had been stitched as if for me only. Its cloth was very smooth and lovely. It looked very nice on my body. I lay worried for many days at this loss. It couldn’t simply be out of my mind. I felt shaken. I tried to forget it. But I could not. Only after many months would I be able to forget it.
