Q1. (i) What was the Great Stone Face?
Answer: The Great Stone Face was a work of nature. It was formed on the side of a mountain by some huge rocks. They had been thrown together in such a position so that, when viewed from some distance, they resembled the face of a human face. If the spectator approached too near, the outline of the face would disappear into a heap of gigantic rocks. It was the belief of many people that the valley owed much of its fertility to the kind face of the Great Stone that was continually looking over it.
(ii) What did young Ernest wish when he gazed at it?
Answer: Young Ernest gazed at the Great Stone Face. It smiled on him. Ernest wished that it could speak because it looked very kindly. Its voice must be pleasant. He would love the man whoever bore such a face dearly.
Q2. What was the story attributed to the Stone Face?
Answer: The story attributed to the Stone Face was that some day a child with the likeness of that face would be born. He would become the greatest and noblest person of his age.
Q3. What gave the people of the valley the idea that the prophecy was about to come true for the first time?
Answer: A rumour was doing the rounds throughout the valley that the great man who was supposed to bear a resemblance to the Great Stone Face had finally appeared. A young man named Gathergold had left the valley and settled at a distant seaport. He had grown to be a wealthy merchant by the time he grew old. He decided to return to his native valley and live his last few days where he had been born. It was believed that he had a close resemblance to the Great Stone Face and the prophecy was about to come true for the first time.
Q4. (i) Did Ernest see in Gathergold the likeness of the Stone Face?
Answer: Ernest felt the absence of kindness, truthfulness and softness on the face of Gathergold which was clearly visible on the Stone Face. This is why he did not see any likeness of Stone Face in Gathergold.
(ii) Who did he confide in and how was he proved right?
Answer: He confided in the Great Stone Face. When everybody else believed that Gathergold resembled the Stone Face, he turned away from the wrinkled shrewdness of that unpleasant face and gazed up the valley, where the Stone Face seemed to say “He will come! Fear not, Ernest; the man will come!” He was proved right when later Gathergold died and was buried. His wealth, which was the body and spirit of his existence, had disappeared before his death. Since the time he lost his gold, it had been generally agreed that there was no likeness between him and the majestic face upon the mountain.
Q5. (i) What made people believe General Blood-and-Thunder was their man?
Answer: The friends of General made them believe that he had always looked like the Stone Face. So they believed that he was the only person who had their own interests.
(ii) Ernest compared the man’s face with the Stone Face. What did he conclude?
Answer: When Ernest compared the man’s face with the Stone Face, he concluded that there was no resemblance. If there was such a likeness as the crowd proclaimed, then Ernest could not recognise it.
