Answer: Hari Singh’s reactions to the prospect of receiving an education change over time. When he started living with Anil he wanted to be literate so that he could become a more cunning cheat. Later on there is a change in his heart. He wants to earn respect in life. Probably he is influenced by the calm in Anil’s life. Although, both of them depend on irregular sources of income, but Anil seems to be more satisfied. Hari Singh develops a desire to be part of the civilized society.
Q2. Why does not Anil hand the thief over to the police? Do you think most people would have done so? In what ways is Anil different from such employers?
Answer: Anil does not hand the thief over to the police because he realized that Hari has already learnt a lesson and he has changed for better now. Otherwise he would have never put the money back in its place. Though Anil knew how Hari cheated him of a rupee while buying the daily supplies but he never made it obvious in front of him. Anil wants to give Hari one more chance to mend his ways and thus forgives him. Hari’s case is such that nobody would have forgiven him and straightaway handed him over to the police.But Anil is a little different from such employers because he is modest in nature and does not want another person to suffer without giving him a chance to become a better person.

Q1. Do you think people like Anil and Hari Singh are found only in fiction, or are there such people in real life?
Answer: In the real world, people like Anil and Hari Singh rarely exist and are mostly found in fiction stories only. Although there may be an exception sometimes when we may come across people like Anil. From the story, we know that Anil was a kind-hearted and considerate person who was deeply concerned about Hari’s education and future. When Hari stole Anil’s money, his conscience pricked him and he had a change of mind and realised the importance of education for his future. Hence, finding such kind of imaginary characters is a rare possibility in today’s world.
Q2. Do you think there is a significant detail in the story that Anil is a struggling writer? Does this explain his behavior in any way?
Answer: Yes, it is a significant detail that Anil is a struggling writer. His lifestyle was simple and used to spend according to his pocket at all time His struggle sometimes gave him a lot of income while at other times he used to worry about the next payment. Hari’s observation about the discontinuation in his work justifies his behave regarding money.
Q3. Have you met anyone like Hari Singh? Can you think and imagine the circumstances that can turn a fifteen-year-old boy into a thief?
Answer: No, I have not come across someone like Hari Singh. With the increase in capitalism and the poor not being able to survive by just daily wages people resort to theft for their survival. Though it is illegal to rob someone, poor kids like Hari, who do not have anyone to depend upon for survival, find stealing the easiest way to live and fill their stomachs.
They do not do it out of sheer desire or interest but as a compulsion of the conditions, they are in. They should not be encouraged to resort to this for their entire life and provided work so that they could feed themselves.
Q4. Where is the story set? (You can get clues from the names of the persons and places mentioned in it.) Which language or languages are spoken in these places? Do you think the characters in the story spoke to each other in English?
Answer: The story is set in Delhi, capital of India. The clues are : ‘The Jumna Sweet Shop’, ‘railway station’, ‘The Lucknow Express was just moving out’. Hindi, English and other Indian languages are spoken in it.
I do not think the characters in the story spoke to each other in English. However, they might have used some English words. These could be like ‘time’, ‘train’, ‘clock tower’. These are now parts of Hindi language as a whole.
