Q1. Why is the lawyer sent to New Mullion? What does he first think about the place?
Answer: The lawyer is sent to New Mullion to serve summons on a man called Oliver Lutkins. He did not ‘ like to go to a dirty place. He expected New Mullion to be a sweet and simple village unlike the dirty and shadowy corners of the city.
Q2. Who befriends him? Where does he take him?
Answer: Bill Magnuson, who says that he is a delivery man at the station, befriends the lawyer. Bill tells him that Lutkins is a very hard man to catch.
Then he suggests to help him by going together to the places where Lutkins usually hangs out at. He takes him to Fritz’s shop, where Lutkins is known to play poker games; then to Gustaf’s shop; Gray’s shop; poolroom; and many other places before finally taking him to Lutkins’ mother’s farm.

Answer: Bill told the lawyer that Lutkins was a hard person to find as he was always busy in some activity or the other. He owed money to many people, including Bill, and had never paid back anybody. He also said that Lutkins played a lot of poker and was good at deceiving people.

Answer: Bill informed the lawyer that he was acquainted with Lutkins’ mother. He described her as a terror, He told her about a time when he brought her a trunk and she nearly tore his flesh off because he didn’t handle it like a box of eggs.
He further stated that she stood approximately nine feet tall and was four feet thick. She was a sharp thinker with a lot to say. He claimed that Oliver must have been aware that he was being pursued and, as a result, would have sought refuge in his mother’s house.

Answer: The narrator does not serve the summons that day. He comes again to New Mullion. He serves it on Lutkins when he is recognised by another official. This official is with him.

Think about It
Q1. When the lawyer reached New Mullion, did ‘Bill’ know that he was looking for Lutkins? When do you think Bill came up with his plan of fooling the lawyer?
Answer: When the lawyer reached New Mullion, ‘Bill’ did not know that he was looking for Lutkins. As the lawyer got down at New Mullion, he found it to be a very messy place. But the presence of the delivery man was the only pleasant sight there. He was a man of forty, red-faced, cheerful and very friendly.
When the lawyer enquired about ‘Lutkins’, he immediately came up with his plan of fooling the lawyer because he (Bill) knew that he himself was Lutkins. And the best way to escape from the lawyer was to be with him for the whole time.
Q2. Lutkins openly takes the lawyer all over the village. How is it that no one lets out the secret? (Hint: Notice that the hack driver asks the lawyer to keep out of sight behind him when they go into Fritz’s.)Can you find other such subtle ways in which Lutkins manipulates the tour?
Answer: Lutkins openly takes the lawyer all over the village but no one lets out the secret. He never lets the lawyer talk to the village people at first. It is always him who approaches them. He keeps telling the lawyer how deceiving Lutkins is and scares him of Lutkins’ mother. The villagers and Lutkins’ mother also join him in deceiving the lawyer.
Q3. Why do you think Lutkins’ neighbours were anxious to meet the lawyer?
Answer: Almost the entire village had enjoyer Lutkins making a fool of the lawyer. Only Lutkins’ neighbours had not seen the lawyer but had come to know what happened. They wanted to see the gullible man who Lutkins had taken for a ride. That is why tin y wanted to meet him.
Q4. After his first day’s experience with the hack driver the lawyer thinks of returning to New Mullion to practice law. Do you think he would have reconsidered this idea after his second visit?
Answer: The lawyer had contemplated returning to New Mullion to practice law after his first day with the hack driver. During his second visit, however, he realized that the hack driver had taken him for a ride (who himself was Lutkins). The townspeople aided Lutkins in this endeavor. It’s conceivable that the lawyer would have reconsidered his decision to work thereafter becoming the town’s laughing stock.
Q5. Do you think the lawyer was gullible? How could he have avoided being taken for a ride?
Answer: Yes, the lawyer was surely gullible. If he had had a worldly experience, he would not have been befooled by Lutkins himself.

Q1. Do we come across persons like Lutkins only in fiction or do we encounter them in real life as well? You can give examples from fiction, or narrate an incident that you have read in the newspaper, or an incident from real life.
Answer: Persons like Lutkins are found in real life as well. They do not just appear in stories. They are very much real. Newspapers are full of reports of such tricksters. There is this famous con man in ‘David Copperfield’ written by Charles Dickens. His name is Uriah Heep. He traps a gullible, rich old man. The old man depends on him entirely. He takes advantage of his trust and takes all his money. He makes the old man an addict to alcohol. Then he forces the old man to marry his daughter to him.
Q2. Who is a ‘con man’, or a confidence trickster?
Answer: A ‘con man’ is a trickster. He is a master at deceiving people like the young lawyer being deceived by Lutkins himself.
