Answer: Mme Loisel was a young and pretty woman who led a simple yet unhappy life. She came from a poor family but always dreamt of riches and luxuries of life, She was always unhappy as she knew her dreams could never be fulfilled. She was aware that her meagre resources weren’t enough to satisfy her expensive desires and all this made her unhappy and angry on her condition.

Answer: Mme Loisel was worried by yet another difficulty after purchasing a lovely gown. She didn’t have any jewels with which to beautify herself. She stated that she would have a destitute appearance. Her husband advised that she put some natural flowers on her head. She, on the other hand, rejected, claiming that having a shabby air in the company of rich women was degrading.

Answer: The problem is solved when her husband gives her four hundred francs. It is to buy a pretty dress for the said party.

Answer: They searched for the necklace in the folds of her dress, then Mr. Loisel went in search of the neck-lace. Later he informed the police, gave advertisement in the newspapers offering a reward. He even went to cab offices, but all in vain.
Q2. How do they replace the necklace?
Answer: After all their efforts went in vain, M. and Mme Loisel decided to buy a fresh new identical necklace to replace the lost necklace. M. Loisel possessed eighteen thousand francs of his inheritance and borrowed the rest of the money from usurers and the whole race of lenders by making ruinous promises. When they borrowed enough money, the couple went to the merchant and bought a new necklace for thirty six thousand francs and returned it to the rightful 0wner, Mme Forestier.

Answer: It takes Loisels a decade to pay back the money they borrowed to buy the necklace. And, it changed everything for them. They had to move to the poorest quarters of the city. With no maids or assistance, Matilda had to cook, clean, mend, sew, bargain with the grocer and butcher to save every sou just for mere survival. The husband had to work in the evening and night to pay their debt. In this way, the course of the Losiel’s life changed due to the necklace.
Q2. What was the cause of Matilda’s ruin? How could she have avoided it?
Answer: The cause of Matilda’s ruin was her dissatisfaction with whatever life offered her. She was always unhappy, She felt that she was born for all the delicacies and luxuries of life. She disliked being in her current circumstances, She could have avoided this ruin by being content with whatever she had.
Q3. What would have happened to Matilda if she had confessed to her friend that she had lost her necklace?
Answer: It could have changed her life. She could not have seen the day of want and misery, She was the woman of the people, She grew old in her youth. She suffered a lot due to the harsh life of want. If she had confessed before Mme Forestier, she could have been excused. It was because the lost necklace was a fake one.
Q4. If you were caught in a situation like this, how would you have dealt with it?
Answer: If I were caught in a situation like this. I would have dealt with it in a different way. I would have revealed the truth to my friend earlier to avoid the unwanted situation. But Matilda and her husband ruined their life by hiding the truth. By telling the truth to my friend and paying her only real cost of the necklace, I would have avoided all miseries and mental agonies that Matilda underwent.

Q1. The characters in this story speak in English. Do you think this is their language? What clues are there in the story about the language its characters must be speaking in?
Answer: Although the characters in the story speak in English, it was probably not their language. Guy De Maupassant, the writer wrote the story in French and it was later translated into English.
There are ample pointers in the text that indicate the French origin of the characters such as the salutations used before the surnames of characters such ‘Monsieur and Mme Loisel’, ‘Mme Forestier’ and ‘George Ramponneau’, the minister’s name. Besides, the words used to denote currency such as ‘Franc’ and ‘Sou’. Then, the location of the shop was at ‘Palais Royal’ and ‘Champs Elysees’ that point out the French origin and history of the characters in the story.

Answer: Honesty is really the best policy. If a man is honest, he will not do anything wrong. Any wrong thing has a harmful effect. Honesty always pays in the end. We should recognise that dishonesty and deception never pay. They cause troubles to others. To give troubles to others due to our selfishness is very bad. We should learn to be content within our means.
Q3. We should be content with what life gives us.
Answer: Yes, we should be at peace and contented with what life gives us. Every person in this world is born in different conditions and his/her entire life package is a great mystery. Some people are born with all riches, luxury, name and fame. On the other hand.
There are some who are born in suffering and crushing poverty which makes it difficult for them to survive. Hence, there is a famous adage which says, “Cut your coat according to your cloth”. This means that one must learn to live within one’s capacity and be content with what one has. A person can try to improve his/her financial position through honest means and eventually can be happy with how he/she manages his/her life peacefully.
